About MoonChild Mosaics
Flick Gillett, owner of MoonChild Mosaics

Hello, and thank you for browsing my website.  I am Flick Gillett, a self-taught mosaic artist based in Cross Hills, a small village half-way between Keighley and Skipton on the border of West and North Yorkshire.  I work from a basement studio with views over my garden to the Yorkshire hills beyond. Much of my inspiration comes from this landscape, and flowers, birds and bees feature abundantly in the majority of my mosaics.

My introduction to modern mosaic was at an arts and crafts exhibition in 2014.  I was fascinated and hugely inspired by the vibrancy of the exhibits and the eclectic mix of materials used to make the pieces and came away determined to have a go. I Googled extensively, watched one or two YouTube clips, dug out some old tiles and unwanted china plates and invested in a pair of wheeled nippers.  Despite cutting several fingers and making a right old mess in my kitchen, I was immediately hooked. Since then what began as a hobby has turned into something of an obsession, whilst my skills have developed through trial and error, with advice and inspiration from others and support from my fellow artists in BAMM North.

My materials of choice include traditional ceramic and glass tiles, stained glass and vintage china, and my studio has become a treasure trove.   Nine years ago, I started my journey into mosaics by making gifts for family and friends.  I began selling pieces a couple of years later and now work on a mixture of my own designs and commissions.

I teach beginners' courses in my home studio.  Aware of my own first faltering steps, I aim to deliver workshops where complete novices can come along, play with glass and jewels and other treasures, and try their hands at something new.

I became a member of BAMM (British Association for Modern Mosaic) in February 2019 and took on the role of Administrator for the regional BAMM North group in November 2020 and Treasurer in May 2022.

I have taken part in four BAMM North exhibitions at RHS Garden Harlow Carr and have also exhibited with BAMM North at Osborne’s café in York.  As well as these group events, I have held a solo exhibition and pop-up-shop at The Blue Teapot café in Mytholmroyd In the run-up to Christmas for the last four years.
